Man City withdrew their interest in Brazilian midfielder Fred, who is currently being targeted by Manchester United, and here is why.

Pep Guardiola’s side was desperate to improve on their squad depth in the January transfer window, and were linked with some exciting stars from all over Europe.

The manager wanted to improve his midfield options, and was looking at players capable of backing up experienced midfielder Fernandinho for the second half of the season. This led City to identify Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred as the right man for the job.

Reports at that time claimed that City were ready to meet his valuation of £50m in January, and that Fred was pretty close to a move to Etihad before the end of the transfer window.

It is understood that the Ukrainian side then brought Manchester United into the mix to try and drive his price up. And reports from M.E.N. now claim that Guardiola pulled out of a deal for the 25-year old in the final stages.

Fernandinho, who is 33, remained the first choice CDM for Pep in his 4-3-3 system, and reports claim that the Brazilian’s form meant that the Spaniard was happy with his options, and decided not to pursue Fred at that time.

The same story also reveals that Shakhtar’s Champions League campaign, which was still active in January, was also an issue in Manchester City completing a deal for Fred midway through the season.

So Guardiola ended up pulling out of the deal, and now, Manchester United are the ones who seem likely to land Fred this summer.

Reports from several news outfits claim that the midfielder is set for a medical at Manchester United, ahead of a move to Old Trafford this summer.

The Red Devils have been interested in Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as well, but are unable to meet his high asking price, why is why their current focus remains on wrapping up the deal for Fred.
