Ex-Arsenal midfielder Stewart Robson has backed Manchester United’s interest in Kalidou Koulibaly.

The Reds have a strong squad at the moment, but are desperate to improve options in their first team. Jose Mourinho has particular areas in the squad that he wants to upgrade on, and a centre-back is probably at the top of his list.

The likes of Toby Alderweireld and Clement Lenglet have been on their radar for quite a while now, and the latest name believed to be added to that wish-list is Kalidou Koulibaly.

The Senegalese international joined Italian side Napoli for just £6.5m, but has already established himself as one of the best defenders in not just the country, but the whole of Europe.

He is a mainstay for the national side, and will be crucial for their chances in the World Cup. The defender has also been a long-term transfer target for London club Chelsea. In fact, the Blues tried and failed to land him last summer.

Reports now suggest that the Manchester United hierarchy are convinced that he is the right man for the side. The interest in Koulibaly arises from the lack of form of Eric Bailly, who joined the Mancunian club in 2016.

Napoli are now demanding £70m for Koulibaly, which the Red Devils are ready to pay. And now, they have also been given a push by Stewart Robson, who believes that the 26-year old star is an upgrade for the club.

Speaking to the media, Robson said: “Bailly hasn’t done it at Manchester United, seems to have fallen out of favour under Mourinho.

“Koulibaly has been brilliant for Napoli over the last two years. I think he would certainly suit their style of play. I think he’s the right sort of defender for them.”

At just 26, he is yet to hit his peak and will walk into the first team at Old Trafford, making an immediate impact. He certainly has the potential to justify his price tag, but do you think he is the right man for United?
