Atletico Madrid fans are in store for the biggest news this summer, as their club has persuaded Antoine Griezmann to pen down a new contract.

The Frenchman was reported to be moving away from the club, with Barcelona in line to sign him. But now, that has been quashed, as the Europa League winners have managed to keep him at the club. He will be staying on until 2023 after agreeing to a one-year extension.

Although Atletico have not gone on to reveal whether his reported £87.75m (100m euros) release clause has been increased, reports do suggest that may have been the case.

The French forward has already got off to a splendid start to their World Cup 2018 campaign in Russia, by scoring a penalty in the game against Australia.

Griezmann has shown his love for the club and his trust in Diego Simeone, who has played a major hand in developing the player into one of the best in the world.

This is indeed a statement of intent from the Spanish club. To hold on to their talisman and also sign Thomas Lemar has brought joy for the Atletico fans. Besides this, they have also extended the deal of French defender Lucas Hernandez to 2024.

Atletico had sent officials to the France squad at the World Cup in Russia to get these deals completed, and they are going to return to Spain with a lot of satisfaction.

Griezmann has played 209 games for the side, and has mustered 112 goals in return. He is one of the most prolific scorers in the game.
