Ander Herrera has claimed that David De Gea will stay put at Manchester United because of the club’s supportive fanbase.

The world-class shot-stopper has been consistently linked with a move to Real Madrid, despite having come close to returning to the Spanish capital once back in 2015, before the move fell through due to a fax machine error.

De Gea did sign a new deal with the Red Devils after the transfer gaffe, but the Galacticos haven’t ended their pursuit of the Spanish international, and the mega transfer gets deemed as ‘imminent’ every summer.

Amid the recurring speculation, however, United fan-favourite Ander Herrera has made a bold claim about his fellow compatriot, by stating that De Gea will stay put at Old Trafford due to the support he receives from the club faithful.

Herrera stated (via ESPN): “I remember that difficult summer when everyone was talking about Real Madrid and he played the first game at Old Trafford and everyone was singing his name and he told me ‘this is amazing, they are the best’. He can be very calm but he’s the best. He will show it again. He’s the best keeper I’ve ever seen in my life and he is with us so we have more chances to win titles.”

The former Athletic Bilbao midfielder also expressed his confidence about De Gea bouncing back from a poor showing at the 2018 World Cup, for which he received tremendous criticism from the Spanish fans and media alike.

“He is so so strong. I remember when I was in Spain and he signed for the club. The first couple of months were hard for him and he became the best goalkeeper in the world in the next four years so I am very relaxed about him,” Herrera added.

“We are very lucky to have him because he is the best in the world. I don’t care what the critics say. He is the best goalkeeper in the world, by far, and he will show it again.

“When you are the best goalkeeper in the world and you don’t make those amazing saves, everyone is going to talk. When I don’t play very well, I don’t get that criticism because I am not one of the best in the world, but he is, so it’s normal and he will cope with it.”

It is quite certain that De Gea has full support of the fans as well as his fellow teammates, and if recent reports are to be believed, Manchester United are also planning to offer a brand new contract to the custodian, so as to keep him at the club beyond 2020.
