It’s been a frustrating spell of transfer business for Manchester United even though there does seem to be light at the end of the tunnel as we approach deadline day.

One transfer story that has dominated much of the window, however, has been United pursuing Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld. The Belgian was instrumental in suring up the Spurs backline after joining them from Atletico Madrid in July 2015.

It seemed as though he was destined for a new club, especially after an iffy season last time out, largely due to injury and the arrival of Davinson Sanchez in North London.

But United have so far been unable to prise the 29-year-old away from the London club because of the amount demanded by Tottenham.

It was reported that Spurs were demanding £75 million or thereabouts for their center-back, a number that the Red Devils aren’t quite willing to cough up. But Mirror now claims that Alderweireld definitely wants a shift to Old Trafford, and he might be willing to wait a while for it.

Alderweireld’s contract with Spurs runs out next year, and though the club has an option of renewing it by a year, that would activate a £25 million release clause in his contract, and would make the player available at a much cheaper price.

And the report says that the Belgian is so keen on playing for Manchester United, that he will be ready to snub any other offer he receives in the near future.

While Alderweireld was one of United’s picks to sign in the ongoing window, the club now looks set to bring in Colombian defender Yerry Mina from Barcelona, and the deal may well be done in the coming few days.

The deadline day has been set as August 9 this time around, and United play Leicester a day later in the Premier League.
