Manchester United‘s pursuit of new talent for their squad is no secret, especially after manager Jose Mourinho made it clear that he needs new faces in the side to compete with the likes of Manchester City and other European heavyweights.

But the Portuguese boss has ended up facing a roadblock in his approach for several players, largely due to failed negotiations between the parties.

One player who has been on the agenda since last winter, as per Het Laatste Nieuws, is Toby Alderweireld.

The Belgian performed brilliantly for Tottenham Hotspur a few seasons ago, but an injury kept him out of much of last season, prompting a replacement in Davinson Sanchez.

The Colombian international’s form was so good that Alderweireld has been unable to break into the Spurs side even after his return, and a Manchester United move seemed destined, keeping in mind the circumstances.

But the North Londoners have played hard to get, and keep raising the value of their defender, causing frustration in the United powers-that-be and forcing them to look elsewhere for strengthening the back-line.

Names such as Harry Maguire from Leicester City and Yerry Mina from Barcelona have been mentioned, though a deal is yet to be worked out.

Alderweireld continues to be top priority, however, and the center-back is reportedly very keen on joining Manchester United, and is hopeful that a deal can be decided between his current employers and the Red Devils before Thursday, which is deadline day.

Reports claim that the centre-back ‘absolutely wants to leave’ Tottenham, but might be forced to stay put in case the club officials cannot come to a middle ground with regards to the final valuation.

Manchester United begin their new season against Leicester City at Old Trafford on Friday, and could perhaps have a Belgian defender as a part of the game.
