The harrowing summer transfer window has finally ended for Manchester United, with fans disappointed in the club’s management for failing to sign any of the big-name players rumoured for months to join the squad.

Worryingly, the transfer window could just be the start of problems at United this season, as rivals Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea have all invested well in the summer, and look set to emerge as the main contenders for the Premier League crown.

Elsewhere, United defender Marcos Rojo, who decided to stay put at Old Trafford after the Red Devils failed in their bid to acquire new defenders, has handed over his number 5 jersey for number 16 instead, and it has prompted speculation over who it’s being reserved for.

The January transfer window is clearly on the mind of the powers-that-be in Manchester, and the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire, and Diego Godin are still very much in the running to come over in the winter.

While it has largely been fans speculating over the next owner of the jersey, a Manchester United legend has emerged as a possible candidate himself – and he comes with bucket-loads of experience.

Rio Ferdinand chimed in via Twitter that being the original owner of the shirt, the English pundit deserved a chance to be signed by Jose Mourinho. All in good fun, of course.

“Just seen my old @ManUtd no.5 shirt is back up for grabs…. inspired…time to get back training! Jose???!!!” he posted, while posting a picture of him training.

The former defender also clarified in a second tweet that he genuinely wants a say in who comes into the club in January, a move that seems imminent.

“Ps… jokes aside… I want consultation on the new #5 af OT!!!! #mufc.”

Sorry Rio, you’re clearly not in Jose’s plans just yet.
