Manchester United may be struggling on the pitch at the moment, but the club continues to back current manager Jose Mourinho amid allegations of a possible sacking just around the corner.

One of the issues that Mourinho has had to deal with, among others this term, has been the lack of performance from most of his players that cost the team dearly in two straight matches against Brighton and Hove Albion as well as Tottenham Hotspur.

Moreover, the manager has also been scrutinized in the press for allegedly having a falling out with certain individuals in the team, players who feel rather disillusioned with life under the Portuguese boss and his methods of playing the game.

One such name is Anthony Martial. The Frenchman was signed for a hefty sum by Louis van Gaal a few years ago, but despite his obvious talent, he has been unable to cement a place in the United starting line-up.

Last season’s erratic display ended any possibility of him being included in the World Cup squad for France, and reports from the summer claimed the winger was looking for a way out of Old Trafford.

But even with these strong rumours, the Red Devils refused to sell their man, with Executive Vice-Chairman Ed Woodward claiming that the manager needed to get more out of the youngster instead of looking elsewhere for alternatives.

Reports in the BBC now state that Martial could be due for a contract extension at United, that could be as much as a five-year deal, to tie the 22-year-old to the club for the foreseeable future.

It remains to be seen whether the Frenchman would be willing to oblige, since he expressed his frustration at being left on the bench more often than not, sparking rumours of an inevitable exit in the recently concluded transfer window.
