Manchester United are in need of defenders, and there is nothing hidden in the fact that Jose Mourinho is desperate for the January transfer window to arrive.

United suffered from an unfruitful summer window where they failed to get any of the big names to bolster their defence. They have since got off to a terrible start to the 2018-19 campaign, and have already lost three Premier League matches.

The issue has been a dodgy defence, which surprisingly did well last season, and boasted of the second meanest back-line in the English top flight.

Meanwhile, one defender that is rising well to mark a name for himself is Swiss youngster Manuel Akanji. The Borussia Dortmund player, who has become an integral part of his national team’s set up, has now shown desire to play for Manchester United.

The 23-year-old, who is with the Swiss national side for the ongoing international break, said to a local media outlet that it would be a dream come true to play for the Red Devils one day.

“Many know that Manchester United has been my favourite club since childhood. It would be nice to play there, but that’s not an issue right now,” said the 23-year-old.

The promising defender joined Dortmund earlier in January this year, and signed a four-and-a-half year contract dated until June 2022. He is a regular at Dortmund, and has also played 11 matches for Switzerland.

The youngster has to keep his performances going at a top level in order to get Jose interested. In the meantime, the Portuguese, as per ESPN, continues to target two other talented defenders, viz. Milan Skriniar of Inter and Alessio Romagnoli of AC Milan.
