It’s been an arduous start to life for Manchester United’s season, and Jose Mourinho will be appalled by the way in which his defense has fared so far.
No fewer than 16 goals have been conceded by the Red Devils, a palpable smear on Mourinho’s image as a defense-oriented tactician.
Of course, the gaffer himself has attributed the fatal flaw to Ed Woodward’s inability to land him an apt defensive specialist during the summer window.
The lack of a leader in the heart of their defense has been telling, and now that the winter window seems within a decent distance, the club may consider revisiting a fond summer target.
As per The Sun, Harry Maguire will be United’s top target in the winter window, with a fee in the range of £60 million reported to be the likely amount dished out for the Englishman.
Of course, the centre-back was the subject of a late interest from United in the summer, when it seemed all but certain that the Toby Alderweireld saga was going nowhere.
At the time, Leicester cut short the Red Devils’ hopes of signing the 25-year-old on account of how valuable the player was to them, and over the lack of time to secure a replacement.
But now, the winter window is reportedly viewed as a confident avenue by United, who seem keen on mending the mistake they made in the summer; Woodward allegedly eager to dish out the requisite funds to keep Mourinho content.
This interest is further fueled by Maguire’s recent revelation that he’d like to function at a top club that plays in the Champions League. He stated: “I do want to win trophies. I want to win trophies for my country and I want to win trophies at club level.”
Of course, looking at how precariously United are perched on the Premier League table, one does wonder whether Old Trafford is the destination that checks the defender’s boxes.
