Real Madrid sacked Julen Lopetegui after a disastrous start to the 2018-19 campaign. He was appointed as coach in June 2018, which had led to him being sacked by Spain on the eve of the FIFA World Cup.

Real, who are currently languishing at sixth place in La Liga table after 11 matches, have appointed Santi Solari as their interim manager at the moment.

However, reports state that Solari will not be given the job for this season, as the club is looking for a seasoned campaigner.

Los Blancos have seemingly identified 73-year-old Jupp Heynckes as a short-term solution, according to Daily Record. Real want the former Bayern Munich manager to get things in control before they can hire someone from their wish-list.

Heynckes claimed two Champions League titles, four Bundesliga titles, and one DFB-Pokal with Bayern. He had retired from football back in 2013, but then returned to manage Bayern once again during the 2017/18 season.

Real are believed to have identified Jose Mourinho and Mauricio Pochettino as their preferred candidates. The Spanish club is willing to be patient to sign either of the two, but it remains to be seen whether Jose or Poch actually leave their current pastures and make the switch.

Jose is keen to stay at Manchester United beyond his contract. Pochettino too, is comfortable with his long-term project with Spurs.

If United fail to do well this season, then Jose could get the sack, and perhaps that’s where Real could come in and get their former manager back. In return, Zinedine Zidane and Antonio Conte are said to be eyeing the post at Old Trafford should Jose depart.

Meanwhile, Florentino Perez hopes to bring the Portuguese back to the Spanish capital, but his first-choice target remains Mauricio Pochettino.
