Manchester United continue to be the subject of much debate this week, as the Red Devils succumbed to a crushing 3-1 away defeat at the hands of Manchester City.

On the back of an impressive 2-1 victory over Juventus, the English giants were expected to mount a much better challenge to their city rivals than they eventually ended up posing, but were largely lacklustre, and did not possess the guile to get anything from the Etihad Stadium.

One of the players who played in both the Juventus game and Manchester City clash was Ashley Young. The right-back has had a career renaissance in the past two seasons, and even participated actively in England’s semi-final finish at the World Cup in Russia earlier this year.

Young has also been captaining United for much of this season, after Antonio Valencia suffered injury troubles and stand-in captain Paul Pogba was stripped off the armband by manager Jose Mourinho for attitude concerns.

Since stepping in, Young has performed admirably, and has won over his teammates and fans alike. His good work on and off the pitch has got the decision makers at United thinking, and it is now being reported by BBC Sport that the Englishman could be due for a contract extension.

The 33-year-old will complete his current contract obligations by the end of the season, and the report suggests that he could be in for a one-year extension once that happens.

Young is already one of the longest serving players in the current Manchester United squad, and despite his age, has continued to perform at a very high level.

The report also claims that Young is keen to stay put at Old Trafford, and that negotiations over a contract extension are only in the initial stages. Having said that, United fans will hope that a deal can be made, and Young can deservedly get another season at the Premier League club.
