Jose Mourinho is having a difficult time finding the right combination to curb Manchester United‘s defensive issues. The Red Devils have conceded 26 goals in the Premier League, holding on to just two clean sheets throughout this season.
Ed Woodward’s decision to keep a grip on spendings has proven to be costly for the Mancunians. Jose Mourinho is forced to rotate between Lindelof, Smalling, Jones, Bailly and Rojo, but none of them have been able to make David De Gea’s job in goal any easier.
In a recent interview with BT Sport, former Manchester United star Dimitar Berbatov told that his club must sign a central defender who is comfortable on the ball in the upcoming transfer window. He suggested that Harry Maguire could be the solution to Mourinho’s defensive woes.
The Bulgarian stated: “I think they need someone at the back that’s comfortable on the ball and don’t buckle under pressure even when someone is attacking you.
“You need to be calm, be able to pass the ball into midfield and carry it. I think they need a player like that.
“I was really impressed with Harry Maguire in the World Cup because he was so composed on the ball and I like that quality in a defender because it benefits the whole team.”
Maguire had an impressive World Cup in Russia this summer. The English International put on an excellent display of his abilities, and helped his country reach the semi-finals of the tournament.
Woodward’s unwillingness to sign him during the summer transfer window has put the defender further out of the Red Devils’ reach, as Leicester City managed to convince Maguire to sign a new contract, which has driven up his market value.
