5 Reasons Why Manchester United Should NOT Buy New Players In January
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is slowly warming up to his role as the caretaker manager of Manchester United. With the winter window almost here, his next big duty will be to facilitate the transfer workings of the Mancunian side.
While the obvious temptation here is to spend big and splash large amounts on some star names, here are a few reasons why the Red Devils may be better off spending the window without making any additions to their roster.
1. Summer Overhaul
United still aren’t certain about their future, and are likely to appoint another gaffer in the summer. As of such, making any marquee signings at this point may be ill-advised, as those funds could be better used before the start of next season.
Besides, the short duration of the winter window means that the club won’t have much bargaining power to start with, and may be siphoned off incredible sums of money. By waiting until the summer, whoever the new gaffer is at the helm will be able to assess his options and bring in the players that best suit their philosophy.

2. Explore All Options
The Norwegian manager is still experimenting with the various ways in which he can make the best use of a talent-riddled squad. The injuries at hand aren’t making this task any easier, either.
As of such, adding more players to a roster where names are already struggling to fit into the starting lineup could be a disaster in the making.
Rather, the former striker would be better off making the best of the side’s present options, and try and rotate the team in a manner that gives expression to the tremendous untapped potential that some of the younger players may have.
3. A Change In Philosophy
By not spending any funds in the winter, United could also indicate a return to their roots. When Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge, the side rarely made humongous signings. In fact, the club record that was first broken by signing Juan Mata under David Moyes has since been surpassed on numerous occasions.
Presently, the iconic club has a golden opportunity to not fall prey to the spending spree that has been plaguing Europe, and instead focus on development.
Solskjaer could experiment by giving graduates of the youth academy a fair chance in the months to come, mimicking the process that gifted Old Trafford with legends like Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

4. Focus On Selling
It is certain that rather than investing in new names, the more pressing need at the side is dealing with the surplus talent at the club. Players like Matteo Darmian, Marouane Fellaini, Antonio Valencia, and Nemanja Matic may well and truly be left without a solid purpose after the sacking of Jose Mourinho.
It could be crucial to sell such talents and clear up the transfer list in preparation for the summer window. Similarly, players like Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez, who are unlikely to enjoy much game-time in the present attack-oriented system, could also pose a problem.
If their sales are left until the summer, the club could be stuck with saga-blocking deadlocks. As of such, those tricky negotiations must be commenced now itself. Loaning them out is also an option that can be explored.
Lastly, the pending contracts of Anthony Martial, David De Gea, and an extension to Paul Pogba’s tenure are all deals that also ought to be met during this period.
5. Preserve The Dressing Room Hierarchy
One of the biggest factors that led to Mourinho’s ousting was the fact that the dressing room had begun to lose respect for him. His departure alone has reportedly instilled an intriguing form of unity among the lads.
A window where new players are brought into the fray would instantly break such a dynamic. Besides, the sheer variety that exists in the pay-grades of some of these talents has already posed issues in terms of hierarchy and satisfaction.
If even more names are added to this, Solskjaer could be faced with an unhappy team – a feat he has been actively trying to avoid.
By maintaining the present order, save a few necessary exits, some much-needed chemistry can be brought to the Mancunian outfit, and something may be salvaged from this season after all.
