The first Premier League outing of 2019 for Manchester United will see them play away to Newcastle United. This will be the last of manageable league fixtures for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before the big challenges role in.
The Magpies are hovering just above the relegation zone, and Rafael Benitez’s impressive home record against the Red Devils is bound to make this a juicier fixture than meets the eye.
Here is how the two teams are most likely to lineup:
Eric Bailly is the obvious absentee for the game after having picked up a red card against Bournemouth. This will add to United’s worrying list of centre-backs who are unavailable, with Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling still absent.
Solskjaer did indicate in his press-conference that Matteo Darmian could play the centre-back role if required. The Norwegian was also confident that Marcus Rashford will have sufficiently recovered from his slight knock on Sunday to start against Newcastle.
Alexis Sanchez is another talent that has impressed the gaffer in training, and could see a start too. Where he will play will be an interesting matter. Paul Pogba will be eager to continue his brilliant form as well.
Goalkeeper: De Gea
Defenders: Young, Jones, Lindelof, Shaw
Midfielders: Herrera, Matic, Pogba
Forwards: Lingard, Rashford, Sanchez
The Magpies will be without Karl Darlow, Federico Fernandez, and Ciaran Clark for the game, with Florian Lejeune likely to be rested for another game. The side will also be without Sung-Yueng Ki, who is off on international duty. However, the fixture may see the return of Jonjo Shelvey.
With the visiting United side desperate to break into the top-four, the home side will have to put in quite a fight to counter their new-found attacking brilliance.
Defenders: Yedlin, Schar, Lascelles, Dummett
Midfielders: Ritchie, Shelvey, Diame, Murphy
Forwards: Perez, Rondon
