Juan Mata is closing in on a new Manchester United contract.

The Spaniard, who arrived at Old Trafford five years ago, is in the final year of his current contract, which leaves him free to depart as a free agent come summer.

His brilliance and expertise and led to strong links with several top clubs, especially from the Premier League and La Liga.

However, according to the latest report from The Sun, the 30-year-old now looks set to sign a new deal with the Mancunian giants.

As per the report, Mata sat down with interim Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to discuss his future at the club.

The Norwegian appears to have advised the Red Devils’ hierarchy to offer the playmaker a new 12-month contract, which could very well consist of an option to extend by a further year.

The new contract is also likely to improve the Spanish international’s current wages, taking his salary up to £170k-a-week.

An Old Trafford source shed some light on this development, revealing: “Mata has had to wait his turn but it looks like the offer is there now. Ole has told the board what he wants to happen.

“There have been others ahead of him but he is top of the queue now. He wants to continue his time here. There is interest elsewhere but he is happy and wants to stay long-term.”
