Man City manager Pep Guardiola has ushered a lot of praise on Juan Mata.

The Spaniard has been a terrific player for Manchester United since his arrival from Chelsea in 2014. However, his current contract is set to come to an end in the summer of 2019, which could see him leave as a free agent come summer.

Amid the uncertainty surrounding his future, Pep Guardiola has hailed the former Valencia player, admitting that he wanted to sign the playmaker during his time at Barcelona.

According to the Evening Standard, Pep admitted: “He’s an exceptional player. One of the players I like the most – not love because I don’t know him well, but one of the players I like the most.

“From Valencia, always in Barcelona, we took an eye to try to bring him to Barcelona, but the problem was we had a lot of midfield players. That was a little bit the problem, but he is an incredible player. He played really well at Chelsea and United.”

At the moment, it looks like Mata could be heading out of Old Trafford, with the season set to end next month. The Red Devils need to act quickly, and perhaps make a better offer in terms of the size of the deal if they intend to hold onto the midfielder.

Reports state that United had already tabled a one-year extension with the option of a further 12 months. But the 30-year-old was not happy with the offer, as he wants a better deal, given it could be his last major contract.

This situation has created an impasse, which could draw the curtains for Mata at United. With a summer clear-out expected at United, it remains to be seen what lies ahead for the 2010 World Cup winner.
