Juan Mata’s exit from Manchester United is gaining momentum with each passing day. The Spaniard, who has been used remotely by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is believed to be one of the prominent names heading for an exit in the summer of 2019.

Mata, who came to Manchester from Chelsea during the 2013-14 season, played an important role under David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, and Jose Mourinho.

The squad player’s prominence has been limited under Solskjaer, and there is also an impasse regarding a contract extension. This will see Mata leaving Old Trafford as a free agent in the summer.

United, who are enduring a horrific end to the 2018-19 season, are believed to be open to the idea of letting many players leave, including Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo, and Matteo Darmian.

Mata, who has generally been used as a right-winger, has made just 30 appearances in all competitions for United this season. The Reds are believed to be in the hunt for a right-winger, with Jadon Sancho on top of their list, as per reports.

Now, according to Spanish outlet SPORT, it is understood that talks of a new £170k-a-week deal with the Spaniard have broken down, and Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are looking to snap Mata on a free transfer.

This report comes despite claims that La Liga champions-elect Barcelona were interested in the playmaker.

The move would suit Diego Simeone’s Atletico, who got hold of Alvaro Morata in January on a loan. Also, Mata will receive guaranteed Champions League football, something United may not be able to provide him with next season.
