Chelsea and Manchester United could be set to battle it out for James Rodriguez.

The Colombian international is set to return to Real Madrid at the end of the season, once his ongoing two-year loan deal with Bayern Munich expires.

The Bundesliga giants have opted to not sign James on a permanent basis, after the player fell out with manager Niko Kovac, their relationship now said to be damaged beyond repair.

However, Los Blancos’ gaffer Zinedine Zidane does not see the playmaker as a part of his plans at the Bernabeu, meaning Rodriguez may have to look for a new club come summer.

Spanish outlet Marca suggests that Bayern still have the first option to sign the midfielder until June 15, for a meagre fee of £36 million.

But with the Germans uninterested, other interested parties have now been alerted regarding this situation, which has paved the way for some heavy interest from the Premier League.

The source adds that English giants Chelsea and Manchester United are interested in signing the 27-year-old up, as both teams look to strengthen their respective rosters.

However, the Blues will only be able to secure his services if their transfer ban is lifted, which gives the Red Devils the edge in this pursuit, at least for the time being.
