Amongst Manchester United’s general falls from grace over the course of the past two months, what has continued to surprise the most is how poorly David De Gea has been performing in front of the club’s goal.

This season saw the Spaniard concede an embarrassing 54 goals in the Premier League, a figure that isn’t becoming of a keeper who was widely regarded as the best in the world.

Even though Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has expressly denied it, the ongoing contract saga between the club and De Gea could be a contributing factor.

The Spaniard has long wanted parity with the wages that Alexis Sanchez makes at Old Trafford, with his representatives arguing that the general market for goalkeepers has gone up as of recent and that the required wage package can be achieved elsewhere as well.

However, the higher-ups at the club don’t wish to give De Gea the extension on his terms, putting everyone in an awkward spot. The keeper is in his final year of contract at the club, extended due to a built-in clause. They could either sell him this summer itself or lose him for free next season.

As per the Daily Record, United are already considering the possibility that they may have to sell De Gea in the summer and have lined up potential replacements. The source believes that Barcelona’s back-up keeper, Jasper Cillessen, is a potential target.

The 30-year-old Dutchman has revealed that he is tired of playing second fiddle to ter Stegen at the Camp Nou and wishes to move in the summer. His transfer fee may be in the range of €25million.

With the likes of PSG, Real Madrid, and Juventus interested in De Gea, it would make sense for the club to cash in on the Spaniard now and let Cillessen, Sergio Romero, or possibly Dean Henderson take the valuable spot from next season.
