Matthijs de Ligt is considering a shock move to Manchester United.

The Ajax sensation has caught the attention of the footballing world through his brilliant performances this season, especially in the Champions League.

The centre-back is expected to make a big-money switch away from his boyhood club this summer, and a host of clubs are eager to secure his services.

Multiple sources have indicated that Spanish juggernauts Barcelona are leading the race for his signature. They are prepared to make a bid worth €70 million (£61m) to close this deal.

But now, according to the Daily Telegraph, De Ligt could very well end up turning down a move to the Camp Nou, in favour of making a shock transfer to Manchester United.

Despite the fact that the Red Devils will play in the Europa League next season, the opportunity to be at the center of the rebuilding process at Old Trafford appeals tremendously to the Dutch international.

Moreover, the Mancunians are also capable of handing the 19-year-old the best possible salary package, as they boast a stronger financial muscle than any of their European rivals.

Barcelona, on the other hand, will face a tough task in amassing funds for this transfer, as they are already set to spend €120m on Antoine Griezmann, and an additional £65m on Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

Therefore, unless the Catalan giants offload a number of their current players to generate funds, Manchester United could very well overtake them in this exciting transfer race.
