The Nations Cup Final on June 9 was important for more reasons than one. The clash between Portugal and the Netherlands was expected to be the last bit of distraction before Matthjis de Ligt decided on his future.

The 19-year-old centre-back is amongst the most sought-after defenders in the world and clubs like Manchester United and Barcelona have been strongly vying for his signature.

It was widely reported that the background work done by the clubs in the week leading up to the final would be crucial to the teenager’s final decision.

However, one individual may have tried to change all that with a quick word with de Ligt after the game, which the Dutch side lost 1-0.

Cristiano Ronaldo was seen sharing a light moment with de Ligt, patting him in a friendly manner and the duo seemed to have shared a laugh over something.

The media swiftly speculated whether this was an attempt by Ronaldo to recruit de Ligt to Juventus. When quizzed about this possibility, de Ligt replied: “That could be true, yes. I didn’t understand him at first. I was a little shocked, so I laughed, but I didn’t say anything.”

He went on to add: “Just after the game you just feel bad that you’ve lost, that’s all you’re thinking about.”

It will be interesting to see if Ronaldo’s offer has an impact on the youngster.

Meanwhile, those fans who were expecting the Dutch outing to be the last distraction in the player’s transfer saga are in for a disappointment.

The Ajax defender stated the following after the defeat: “I don’t know. Now I am going on vacation & I just take a rest, relax & then I’ll see. When you rest, you have enough time to think.”
