Manchester United’s defensive pursuits this season has ensured that their fans have gone to heights of desperation in speculating what kind of a centre-back will join them this summer, if at all.

The side has been linked with a host of defenders, with Matthijs de Ligt the star name that most guided the hopes of United fans.

However, that saga has long wilted, as have hopes in other pursuits with a variety of names appearing to be in some degree of failure or the other.

Amidst these, the saga of Harry Maguire was given a lot of weight and there appeared to be significant reports indicating that interest may have existed.

To add fuel to the fire, the player himself did something that sent hopes flying even higher.

Maguire, on his Instagram, liked a comment of Manchester United fan ‘kingblueturtle’ which stated: “You’re going to be a fan favourite in Manchester United.”

This action of his reopened numerous interests as the United angle had died down for a bit. However, it was the Mancunian link that had stood strong as the English centre-back was strongly linked with joining Manchester City, with some reports claiming that a medical was being prepped for the 26-year-old.

As expected, most outlets covered the news and for a while, United fans were given speculative hope.

However, Maguire later posted a tweet clarifying matters, stating: “I didn’t mean to guys… we’ve all been there 🤷🏻‍♂️😂”

This certainly makes matters even more awkward. While his liking the comment can be swept aside as an innocent mistake, the fact that he went on to acknowledge the mistake can be taken in several different ways.

Links aside, the player could end up staying with the Foxes after all, even though an £80 million transfer may be on the lines.
