Transfer deadline day was a disappointing affair for most Manchester United fans. The biggest news on Thursday which pertained to the Red Devils was the confirmation of Romelu Lukaku’s departure to Inter Milan.

The sheer drama that surrounded that particular saga ensured that most fans viewed it as good riddance of sorts and even began to dread the lack of a replacement for the Belgian striker.

However, Lukaku’s exit has now paved the way for another change and it is one that supporters of the Mancunian giants may be excited about.

Manchester United officially announced that Anthony Martial would be wearing the no.9 jersey for them hereon.

This is the second time that the Frenchman has held that number as it was initially awarded to him upon moving from Monaco. While the no.11 jersey he wore instead is also quite important given that Ryan Giggs immortalized that number at Old Trafford, this move is more instrumental.

Many fans took to Twitter to exclaim their appreciation of the change and hoped that this was indicative of a change in Martial’s on-field positioning as well.

During their pre-season tour game against Tottenham Hotspur, Martial was a brilliant no.9 and it is fair to say that fans will be excited to see him in the jersey yet again.

This also leaves the question as to who will be given the no.11 jersey next. Perhaps another pacey Welshman in the form of Daniel James will prove to be Giggs’ true successor at the Theatre of Dreams down the line. For now, the new signing will be donning the no.21 instead.

His fellow new signings Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have been given the no.5 and no.29 jerseys while academy graduates Mason Greenwood and Angel Gomes will wear the no.26 and no.28 shirts respectively.
