Manchester United have a new centre-back in Harry Maguire and he is proving to be well worth the long summer’s wait. When signed from Leicester City, there were many who felt that United were overpaying for his services.

While the raw value of the Englishman is up for debate, there is no arguing that he made a tremendous impact in Manchester United’s 4-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday.

Most fans commented on how nice it felt to at last have a defender who could do a decent job at the back as well as play the ball effectively.

In fact, such was the brilliance of his debut that he was named the official Man of the Match. Sky Sports’ fresh pundit Jose Mourinho was all-praise for the 26-year-old and Manchester United fans were fawning over his brilliance.

During his time with the Foxes, Maguire was nicknamed ‘Slabhead’. His aerial skill was certainly tested against Chelsea and it seemed to be just shy of making its effect known.

However, Paul Pogba may have now found a new moniker for Maguire.

Speaking after the game, the Frenchman remarked: “As I call him [Maguire] – ‘the Beast’. Honestly, as you saw, he was really impressive. He is a leader. He fits right in with us in training.

“We talked about controlling the defence well and he has a good understanding with Victor (Lindelof). It was a very good match to start with from the whole team.”

United have lacked defensive discipline and security for far too long and many feel that in Maguire they finally have their long-awaited answer.

Now it remains to be seen whether ‘the Beast’ is able to sustain his ethos and put up consistently impressive showings as a Red Devil. Next up, Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday.
