What Mourinho Had To Say About Maguire’s Performance vs. Chelsea
Manchester United were able to pen their bragging rights in superb fashion as they succeeded in overpowering Chelsea 4-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The intent shown by Chelsea in the opening minutes would have in no way predicted the manner in which they performed for the rest of the game as goals from Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Daniel James marred Frank Lampard’s managerial debut.
In addition to a strong offensive showing, United also succeeded in tightening their defense, thus ensuring that even the relentless Chelsea frontline was rendered toothless.
Former manager of both sides, Jose Mourinho, who is now a pundit for Sky Sports, had nothing but praise for one Manchester United player, in particular.

Speaking about Harry Maguire, who was named the Man of the Match, Mourinho stated: “He fully deserved the award, he was solid like a rock. You can be very dangerous in attack but if you feel that a mistake is around the corner it takes your confidence away and you don’t play as well.
“When you feel there is something that allows you to play you are much more confident. As I always said Lindelof can be a very good player. With Maguire, it can be a very good partnership.”
While he was all-praise for United’s backline, the same magnanimity wasn’t extended by the Portuguese tactician to Chelsea’s defense.

About the Blues, Mourinho critiqued: “They were not compact defensively and there wasn’t enough aggression on the ball. The defensive line was never compact. My feeling is that today they had the possibility to play with more know-how.
“To come to Old Trafford, even if it’s not the huge Manchester United team that used to scare people, it’s still Manchester United, it’s the first match at home, first match of the season, people are excited. A little bit of experience would fit well with the team.”
Spoken with proper experience backing him up. It will be interesting to see if his season’s predictions age well though.
