After a stagnant transfer window that barely saw any departures from the club, Manchester United have managed to offload three out-of-favour players in the last 24 hours – just a day before the summer window closes shut.
The exits began with Alexis Sanchez following Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan on a season-long loan deal. United will still pay a part of the Chilean’s wages, but the switch spells good news for all parties involved.
The Inter duo will be joined by two more out-of-favour Manchester United defenders in the Serie A, in the form of Matteo Darmian and Chris Smalling.
Parma have supposedly coughed up a £1.4m fee to sign Darmian on a permanent transfer. The 29-year-old full-back will finally return to his homeland after spending multiple seasons on the Mancunian sidelines.
The English centre-back, on the other hand, has joined Roma on a €3m loan deal, after the central defensive roster at the Theatre of Dreams got a little too crowded for everyone’s liking.
The swift business from Manchester United, which will see their squad become smaller and the wage bill lighter, has been met with good reviews from the club’s fan-base.
Here’s a collection of reactions from social networking website, Twitter:
If you told me that Ole would come in and get rid of Darmian, Smalling, Alexis, Lukaku, Herrera, Valencia, drop/replace Phil Jones, drop/replace Ashley Young I’d have thought it was a dream. We haven’t had the replacements but we’re without a doubt heading in the right direction.

Solskjaer is really saving the club.

Transfers since Ole came in
Despite the lack of signings by our board, and the stupidness of not extending Herrera earlier. Ole is doing the best we could have hoped for.

Ole is in the process of clearing out players from the tenures of Sir Alex, Moyes, Van Gaal & Mourinho which is what everyone’s been crying out for. Time & patience is required. Ole said there‘d be changes & he’s living up to his word. The rebuild is well & truly underway. #mufc
