Marcus Rashford’s performance during Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge clearly stole the show. Despite the encounter being in the Carabao Cup, the intent to excel and prove a point was evident in the striker.
Rashford has come under heavy criticism in recent days as replacing Anthony Martial as the sole striker didn’t go down well.
The Englishman lacked a clinical edge in his finishing and was almost never able to place himself in the right spot to make the best out of the crosses from Daniel James.
To top it off, he missed a penalty against Norwich City this weekend. Although he later redeemed himself by scoring and then creating Martial’s eventual winner, the complete redemption arrived on Wednesday with his exceptional free-kick highlighting an excellent performance.
While a lot of reactions to the free kick have dotted the internet and have gone viral, the best one yet was on the pitch itself.
In fact, Martial aptly summarized how exceptional the free kick was. Praise was heaped on Rashford following the game and now fans are in equal dread and anticipation of whether or not this spell of form will continue. What is evident, however, is that the combination is an assured recipe for magic.
The duo under Louis Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho rarely shared a pitch together, almost always being involved in a straight swap substitution.
However, if these recent games are any indication, then this pairing could certainly become the next great one in United’s long and illustrious history of forwards.
Will Martial get more chances to recreate that expression? Time will tell.
