Jose Mourinho secured a shock appointment as head coach of Tottenham Hotspur after Mauricio Pochettino was sacked midway through the week.
The entire saga had three entire fanbases completed rattled as Chelsea fans condemned Mourinho for signing with a historical rival, one section of Manchester United fans claiming he’d leave Spurs worse off with the other dreading what he could conjure up and finally Spurs fans in disbelief to as what had taken place. Social media platforms were a sight to behold as something unpredictable had happened.
One such sight was a meme that had depicted a sad Pablo Escobar by BenchWarmers on Instagram with the caption:
“#Matic waiting for #January so Jose #Mourinho can sign him.”

A joke regarding the Portuguese’s tendencies to play favourites with players he may have worked with in the past, and to constantly put his trust in them even if they may be underperforming.
Nemanja Matic was seen as such a player at Old Trafford as fans had grown tired of the former Chelsea boss insisting on starting him despite sub par performances. It is this tendency of Jose that the meme was mocking, by implying the ex-Chelsea man would follow his former boss again to his new club.
However, it was not the meme but how Matic himself reacted to it that blew it up. The midfielder took the post in a very humours fashion and replied with a laughing emoji followed by a clap emoji, showing his amusement at the joke. The Serbian clearly has a sense of humour and doesn’t shy away from getting involved in it.
Unfortunately, a lot of fans did not take the gesture very well and claimed it was very disrespectful towards the club.
Although the 31-year-old’s situation at Old Trafford is far from comfortable, there is nothing wrong with laughing over what was a clear joke. Fans seem to be blowing the incident out of proportion as most seem to be on board with the idea of offloading him immediately.
