Manchester United gifted their fans a late and glorious Christmas gift when they bossed Newcastle United 4-1 at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils seemed slated for disappointment yet again when Matthew Longstaff opened the scoring in the 17th minute.
However, when the home side responded, it was with precision. Anthony Martial equalized in the 24th minute which was followed by a thumping Mason Greenwood strike in the 36th minute. On the cusp of half-time, Marcus Rashford furthered the scoreline. The second-half opened with a testament to passion when Martial completed his brace in the 51st minute.
Amongst the scorers, Mason Greenwood has been receiving the lion’s share of the praise and rightly so. The teenager has long been touted for greatness and his recent showings have proven just why.
The goal was his third one in the Premier League and the 8th one so far this season, with nearly half of the campaign still remaining.
Greenwood’s instant rise to fame can perhaps be best captured in what Andreas Pereira posted to Instagram about him.
The starlet has already been touted to be amongst the best that the United academy has produced, and that is saying something about an institute that has tutored some of the greatest names in English football.
Pereira himself had a good night as he was instrumental in creating Martial’s opener as well as putting up a confident showing during the game.
Greenwood’s ability to be consistent with his goal-scoring prowess will be crucial going into the rest of this campaign. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will certainly be pressured into purchasing a back-up forward, preferably a striker, in the winter transfer window.
However, if Greenwood can keep up this streak, his brilliance may even outshine the fact that Marcus Rashford has already outdone his all-time statistics half-way into the season.
