Manchester United have made a promising acquisition in the form of Bruno Fernandes. Even though the Portuguese midfielder arrived at the end of a long-drawn saga that most supporters will be eager to forget, there is immense anticipation as to how he will perform on the pitch.

Further still, the 25-year-old has a massive task ahead of him especially since United have been poor in the very area that he specializes in. The goals and assists he has been notching over the recent years also add to this hope.

And to round it all off, Fernandes has been assigned a vital jersey number to commence his Old Trafford journey.

The midfielder will wear the no.18 jersey at Manchester United. The number was vacant when Ashley Young departed to Inter Milan earlier this transfer window.

However, it holds a more special place at Old Trafford due to being the jersey in which Paul Scholes carved out an immortal spot for himself during his illustrious stint.

Fernandes is well aware of this and it has actually motivated him since his childhood, as he reveals (via club’s official website): “When I grew up, I saw Paul Scholes playing in it [number 18 shirt] and for me having this shirt and this number of an amazing player is something I will enjoy. I know I have a lot of responsibility.”

In the same interview, Fernandes also adds: “There are a lot of reasons for the no.18. It’s a number I like. The last three years I have played as no.8 because it’s the number my father had as a player and my birthday and it’s the number I like. Number 18 is also the birthday of my wife.”

A number with heaps of meaning and hopefully one that United supporters will see involved in loads of goals down the line.
