Martial Has Scored More Goals In All Competitions Than Any Other PL Player In 2020
Manchester United extended their incredible unbeaten run of games to 19 strong as they secured a crucial away win against Crystal Palace on Thursday.
The final scoreline stood 2-0 in favor of the Red Devils and it was the in-form duo of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial who made the net bulge. The home side certainly made life hard for the traveling side who were rendered toothless for a bit due to an altered starting lineup.
However, a disallowed VAR goal due to offside and a freak injury to Patrick van Aanholt ensured that Palace did not have much of a fight left in them to attempt scoring a consolation goal, let alone grab a draw.
Incidentally, with that goal, Anthony Martial has now set an impressive record and one that may have gone under the radar for a while.
Thursday’s goal was the Frenchman’s 12th one in all competitions in 2020. This is more than any other player in the Premier League. He has currently managed to net 22 goals in total this season, tied for the top spot at Old Trafford with Marcus Rashford.
Incidentally, it was the injury-caused absence of the Englishman that gave Martial his big break in the early months of the year. However, in the post-lockdown period, the return of Rashford has reignited their shared chemistry and the competitive edge, with both of them matching each other goal for goal.
Martial’s hattrick Sheffield United was certainly the highlight of this tally but the sheer consistency of the forward is remarkable. United still have two more Premier League games to play and are still firmly in the running for both the FA Cup and the Europa League.
As such, Martial could continue this tally even further in the games to come and set a strong precedent for the next season.
