Manchester United have officially signed Donny van de Beek from Ajax.
The 23-year-old midfielder has penned a five-year-long contract with the Red Devils with an option to extend for a further year. This is a deal that caught many supporters by surprise as a prior interest was revisited only last weekend and the deal was quickly wrapped up following it.
This announcement is the last step in what has been a rapid piece of business for the club, a precedent they will be looking to build on.
The player himself is predictably ecstatic at having made the move, as he opened up to the official website, stating: “I cannot begin to explain how incredible an opportunity it is to join a club with such an amazing history. I would like to thank everyone at Ajax. I grew up there and I will always have a special bond with the club.
Van de Beek then goes on to talk about his new side: “I am now ready to take the next step in my career and perform at the highest level and there is no higher standard than Manchester United. Everyone has told me how amazing the Old Trafford atmosphere is and I am looking forward to experiencing that, once it is safe for the fans to return.”
The Dutchman will join an already formidable midfield set-up at the side, adding to the prowess of the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay, Fred, and Nemanja Matic. He acknowledged the squad depth, stating:
“This team has some of the best midfielders in the world and I know that I can learn from them and also bring my own strengths to the group. Having spoken to the manager about his vision for this team, the direction that the club is going in is hugely exciting and I cannot wait to be a part of that.”
Fans will be eager to see him in action at United once the Premier League kicks off.
