Jose Mourinho and Tottenham Hotspur are looking to purchase Jesse Lingard.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær has plenty of work left to do at Manchester United. Their season opener against Crystal Palace ended in an abysmal 3-1 loss and the warning bells are already ringing out there.

While purchasing players in the transfer window is the priority, the Norwegian gaffer will also have to look at possible exits from his roster.

A packed season means that every back-up option will be important, especially if silverware in domestic cup competitions is to be aimed for.

In that regard, United may have to mull over the departure of one of their boyhood stars.

According to ESPN, Jose Mourinho has asked chairman Daniel Levy to explore the option of purchasing Jesse Lingard this summer.

Mourinho coached Lingard during his time at Old Trafford and the English forward certainly had a good spell under the Portuguese gaffer.

In the years since, however, Lingard’s form suffered at the club, leading to him being sidelined by Solskjær.

The report stresses that Lingard is being viewed as the potential replacement for Dele Alli. The Englishman was left out of the match day squad against Southampton on Sunday.

It is also added that the entire deal hinges on whether or not a buyer can be found for the 24-year-old Alli. The loan purchase of Gareth Bale could certainly be a factor here as well.

While Lingard may not be eager to leave United, 27 years of age isn’t the best point in a career to warm benches either. It is believed that Solskjær has assured him of game time due to the congested fixture list but regular action is what he may be looking for.

What will a reunion with Mourinho look like for Lingard, especially given their shared numbers from the 2017/18 season?
