Manchester United secured their place in the finals of the Europa League, albeit on a losing run as they suffered a 3-2 loss to Roma in their second leg. Fortunately for the English side, the towering 6-2 lead they had commanded ensured that they were able to digest this slim loss quite well.
Roma’s attempt at a near-impossible comeback was engineered via goals from Edin Dzeko and Bryan Cristante as well as being aided by a late own goal from Alex Telles.
However, despite the loss, it was Edinson Cavani’s superb brace that will be the talking point of the night as the Ecuadorian striker has now scored 5 goals in 5 appearances in the Europa League, bringing his season’s tally at United to an excellent 14.
The striker was also involved in an interesting incident wherein he was seen defending Mason Greenwood quite strongly after the teenager was involved in an altercation with the Roma players.
The incident and Cavani’s reaction has gone down quite well in the eyes of the supporters who have hailed the veteran player for standing up for his younger teammate in the face of Gianluca Mancini and Rick Karsdorp.
Further, supporters also viewed this intervention as yet another reason to love their new no.7 who has truly provided his fair share of vital goals and assists this campaign.
Now, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the 34-year-old who is allegedly still on the fence regarding extending his stay at the Theatre of Dreams for another season.
If he does elect to stay on though, Greenwood will certainly be happy to have both a goalscorer to look up to as well as a teammate to watch his back on the pitch.
