What Maguire Said About Varane And Lindelof After United 5-1 Leeds

Manchester United’s attack got all the credit for dismantling Leeds United’s defence by putting up five goals past goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

However, the Red Devils’ centre-back pairing of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof assured David de Gea was a spectator for whole of the afternoon except in the 49th minute for Luke Ayling’s equaliser. To be fair, there wasn’t much either the defenders or the goalkeeper could’ve done to prevent Ayling’s stunning strike.

Lindelof, especially, was at his best, perhaps motivated by the rousing reception Raphael Varane got during his unveiling just before the kick-off at Old Trafford.

Maguire, who also kept Leeds’ attackers in check, talked about the ‘winning mentality’ his new centre-back partner will bring with him.

“You’ve seen what he’s won over his career,” the Englishman said (via the Guardian). “He’s played in some of the top teams about – the French squad and Real Madrid – and he’s won absolutely everything.

“I think he’ll bring that winning mentality and his footballing ability to the club. To bring in players of his calibre is really, really exciting.”

Further, the United captain also lauded Lindelof’s pass to find Bruno Fernandes for his side’s fourth goal of the day.

He added: “You’ve seen again how well Victor played. He’s an excellent footballer so to have this number of top centre-backs is great.

“At one of the biggest clubs in the world you don’t expect to have an easy ride and have no competition for places. Bringing in players is great, we thrive off it.”

If the performance on the Premier League opening weekend is anything to go by, Sweden’s new captain will not let Varane take his place as comfortably as many believe will be the case.
