Erik ten Hag is getting closer to leaving Ajax for Manchester United, and wants Jurrien Timber to follow his footsteps.

The Ajax boss has emerged as the clear favourite to lead the Red Devils next season following positive talks held with United during the international break.

A final decision will be made after the Premier League outfit carry out a second and final round of interviews, but Ten Hag has the edge amid uncertainty over PSG’s stance on Mauricio Pochettino.

It is reported that some United players have reservations about the potential appointment of the 52-year-old tactician.

However, if Ten Hag gets his way, some of them won’t be at the club beyond the summer. Further, the United hierarchy will need to make signings as per the Dutchman’s wishes as well.

His early preference, if he lands the managerial role at Old Trafford, is Ajax defender Timber, as per Dutch journalist Mike Verweij.

The Netherlands international primarily plays as a centre-back, but has also been deployed at right-back by Ten Hag. His ball playing ability and pace makes him an ideal player for Ten Hag’s system.

But before United make any approach for him, they need to formalise Ten Hag’s appointment.
