Barcelona and Manchester United have agreed an outline deal for Frenkie de Jong, but the negotiations have slowed down due to indecision on the player’s part.

De Jong remains keen on staying at Camp Nou, Xavi is happy to have him, and publicly the club’s hierarchy have also stated their desire to keep hold of the midfielder.

However, the Catalan giants are not in a financial position to hold on to one of their highest earners. They want the 25-year-old to either depart for a significant transfer fee or renegotiate a new contract with lower salary.

As things stand, De Jong isn’t interested in taking a pay cut, and seems destined to move to Old Trafford. But the transfer saga is not coming to an end anytime soon with many factors yet to be aligned.

Amid the slow development, De Jong’s social media activity has fuelled speculation.

Tyrell Malacia was announced as a new United player on Tuesday. Following his unveiling, the left-back took to Instagram to share his excitement. De Jong ‘liked’ Malacia’s post and sent United fans into a frenzy.

The duo played together for Netherlands in the Nations League last month, and if things pan out as per Erik ten Hag’s wishes, they will soon share the pitch in United colours.

De Jong has now returned to Spain from his holiday, and will discuss his future with the La Liga club.
