Erik ten Hag needed to watch only two competitive Manchester United performances from the touchline to realise the rebuilding job is harder than he thought earlier in the summer.

Before their Premier League opener, United only made three signings to bolster the squad that barely qualified for the Europa League and lost experienced faces like Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani and Juan Mata.

Two straight defeats against Brighton and Brentford made Ten Hag demand more signings from the club hierarchy. Real Madrid star Casemiro has already arrived in Manchester in a big money move, but won’t be available for the Liverpool game.

Meanwhile, United aren’t just stopping at Casemiro. The Red Devils want to sign Cody Gakpo as well as Antony from the Eredivisie, as per Marcel van der Kraan.

Gakpo is aware of Ten Hag’s interest but his focus is on the Champions League play-off tie against Rangers. However, United have already opened talks with Ajax to sign Antony.

Ten Hag’s former club rejected their €80m bid this week, but the Premier League giants are expected to return with an improved offer. Further, the Brazilian winger is also pushing for a move and opted to miss Ajax training on Friday and Saturday.

It is understood that the coming 48 hours will decide whether the 22-year-old gets his move to United or spends another year in Amsterdam.
