De Jong Looks Set To Leave Barcelona After Being Left Furious With Situation At The Club
Frenkie de Jong is reportedly furious with his current situation under Xavi and looks set to depart Barcelona.
Manchester United were keen to sign the Netherlands international due to the player’s successful past with Erik ten Hag at Ajax. The new United boss wanted to build his side around the versatile midfielder.
Both United and Barcelona also found an agreement over a fee for De Jong’s transfer, but the move never materialised because of several reasons, including the 25-year-old’s desire to remain in Catalonia and play Champions League football.
He wasn’t very inclined to reunite with Ten Hag and despite a second-fiddle role in Xavi’s maiden campaign, De Jong believed he’d be able to push for a starting spot this season. However, things haven’t turned out as he envisioned.
Barcelona find themselves on the verge of dropping down to the Europa League, with De Jong failing to start in the club’s important games in both the Champions League and LaLiga so far.
According to Spanish outlet Sport (via The Sun), the Dutchman is disgusted with his role, as Xavi continues to bench him in favour of Pedri, Gavi, and Sergio Busquets.
De Jong is refusing to rule out an exit from the Spanish giants in the upcoming window should the situation remains unchanged.
United remain interested in him despite the signing of Casemiro from Real Madrid.
