Manchester United may end up signing a new forward in the coming days after missing out on Cody Gakpo.

Erik ten Hag had his eyes set on a move for the PSV star since last summer. The former Ajax manager even held talks with Gakpo during the summer transfer window, but the club decided to not make any formal approach after the massive outlay that saw the likes of Antony and Casemiro move to Old Trafford.

United were expected to pursue Gakpo in January after Cristiano Ronaldo left the club mid-season. However, the 23-year-old versatile attacker has joined Liverpool ahead of the winter window.

Meanwhile, it’s being reported that the Red Devils are hoping to sign another forward in the next few days.

According to Spanish outlet SPORT (via The Sun), United are interested in tying down Marco Asensio before he’s available on a free transfer at the end of the season. The Real Madrid man will be allowed to negotiate a pre-transfer agreement with other clubs from January 1.

Real, who have sealed the big-money signing of Endrick Felipe from Palmeiras, are not expected to meet Asensio’s wage demands. The Spanish striker’s current wages are understood to be around £120,000 per week.

If Ten Hag sees the quality in Asensio, it shouldn’t be tough for United to afford the La Liga forward, who has been directly involved in three goals in nine league appearances this season.
