Manchester United could replace Maguire with another English defender

Harry Maguire hasn’t had the best of the last ten days. Or for that matter seasons.

The Manchester United captain has fallen behind Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane in the pecking order at Old Trafford. He has only been handed minutes when one of the first-choice pairing has been injured, rested or the side are defending a lead in dying minutes.

In the first-leg clash against Sevilla, Maguire came on at half-time after Varane sustained an injury. In stoppage time of the game, Youssef En-Nesyri’s header drove the ball straight onto Maguire’s forehead and into the back of the net for an equaliser.

A week later, Maguire was again involved in Sevilla’s goal, as he lost possession of David de Gea’s wayward pass to Erik Lamela. The Argentine winger left the ball for En-Nesyri for an easy finish from close range to open the scoring. United never recovered from the eighth-minute blunder away from home and conceded two-more avoidable goals to bow out of the Europa League quarter-finals 5-2 on aggregate.

Similarly, it’s tough to see Maguire bounce back from the latest setback.

English defender could replace Harry Maguire at Manchester United

The 30-year-old is expected to be one of the first high-profile players to exit United, as Erik ten Hag plans to overhaul his squad. And it seems, the Red Devils already have a replacement in their sights.

According to the Daily Mail, United are keeping tabs on Fikayo Tomori. The English defender has delivered multiple resilient defensive showings to help AC Milan progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

The former Chelsea man is a right-footed centre-back, and has the potential to challenge and eventually replace Varane on the right side of the Manchester United defence. He is also being monitored by Tottenham Hotspur.
