Manchester United have the ball in their court with regard to the transfer of Napoli centre-back Kim Min-jae, as per reports.

The defenders at Old Trafford are the least of Erik ten Hag’s worries, with the 1-0 defeat at the hands of West Ham underlying that United need a more reliable goalkeeper between the sticks as well as clinical finishers up front.

A new starting centre-back isn’t a priority, as both Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane have done brilliantly this season. But the Red Devils lack quality centre-back options on the bench.

Manchester United lack depth at centre-back

In recent games, the Dutch coach has shown little trust in Harry Maguire, opting to instead play left-back Luke Shaw at the left side of the defence. As such, if the budget allows, United might look at strengthening their backline.

Kim, who has played a big role in ending Napoli’s 33-year wait for a Serie A title, has been linked with a Premier League move ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to Corriere dello Sport (via the M.E.N Sports), United will be able to sign the 26-year-old should they make a €60m bid this summer. A deal could be found between Napoli and the English outfit, with the president of Italian champions expecting a busy summer. The reported figure exceeds the release clause – set at €45m – in his contract.

The prospect of signing Serie A’s best defender for €60m certainly appears attractive. However, United have more pressing needs in other areas.

In Naples itself, the Old Trafford outfit can find a finisher they desperately lack. While Kim has guarded Napoli’s goal this season, Victor Osimhen has carried the burden of rattling the net at the opposite end. He’s the league’s leading goalscorer this season.
