David de Gea’s abysmal form between the sticks at the business end of the season has threatened to derail Manchester United’s season and has left Erik ten Hag in a conundrum with regard to his transfer plans.

The Red Devils still want to keep the Spaniard next season and remain in talks with him over fresh terms. However, De Gea has been given no assurances that he will stay as United’s first-choice goalkeeper next season.

Manchester United want to hold talks with Dean Henderson

But at the same time, it’s not guaranteed that the Premier League giants will make a marquee signing in the goalkeeping department. United will have to act in a calculated manner in the transfer window to ensure they don’t breach any financial fair play guidelines.

The failure to qualify for the Champions League is only going to make things worse, financially. The defeat against West Ham, in which De Gea was at fault for the game’s only goal, intensified the fourth-placed side’s fears of being leapfrogged by Liverpool.

United are monitoring several goalkeepers, including Brentford Number 1, David Daya.

According to ESPN, they are also set to hold talks with Dean Henderson about his future. Currently at Nottingham Forest on loan, the Englishman is ruled out for the season with an injury but will be fit to return to training in the summer. He has a contract at United until 2025.

After a lack of chances during the 2021-22 campaign, Henderson decided to leave United very early in the summer and didn’t speak to the former Ajax manager before his decision.

In the case Ten Hag decides to spend a big part of United’s budget to address the striker position, he could consider bringing Henderson back to the first team. It is reported that the goalkeeper has attracted interest from clubs in England and abroad.
