What Harry Maguire said about Marcus Rashford after Newcastle defeat
Harry Maguire has jumped to the defence of his Manchester United teammate Marcus Rashford amid the latter’s concerning form.
The England forward seemed a shadow of his best self at St James’ Park, as the Red Devils failed to trouble Newcastle’s backline, succumbing to a 1-0 defeat away from home.
Such a toothless attacking display has been endemic in Rashford’s season, with the 26-year-old boasting just two goals under his belt in all competitions this term.
Further, a lot of fans were left disappointed with his defensive work out of possession, and he failed to properly support his full-backs on several occasions. Whether that was because of tactical instruction from Erik ten Hag or just Rashford’s disinterest in tracking back remains unclear.
Harry Maguire backs Manchester United teammate
Amid rising questions over his form, United’s best player of the night, Maguire – who himself went through a similar stretch last season – defended his teammate by reminding the critics how incredible he was last campaign.
“Marcus had an unbelievable season last season,” the centre-back said (via The Mirror). “This season, it hasn’t clicked for him. He’s working hard. Everyone in that dressing room knows what he’s about.”
Rashford indeed was brilliant last season, having scored 30 goals and registered 10 assists for United. However, past records can only buy so much time. Ten Hag’s men are already all but out of the Champions League, and are losing ground on the top four. A change is needed to get back on the right track, be it tactical, personnel or both.
