Antony replacement? United looking at former Real Madrid winger
Manchester United are reportedly monitoring Takefusa Kubo in their bid to potentially replace Antony.
With every passing matchday, United’s decision to spend nearly €100m on Ajax’s Antony seems more and more ludicrous. Even before he made his debut at Old Trafford, the Premier League giants’ move was questioned by many and labelled as a panic buy.
Still, considering his exploits in Eredivisie and Champions League under Erik ten Hag as well as his ability to stretch backlines and find his teammates regularly in the penalty area with his left foot, a few United fans decided to trust the club’s hierarchy’s thought process. The Brazilian’s encouraging start, which included a debut goal against Arsenal, further calmed the nerves.
However, Antony has regressed since the second half of the last season. This term, he’s yet to register a goal or an assist in all competitions.
Manchester United interested in former Real Madrid winger
Accordingly, United are losing their patience with their big-budget signing and eyeing his replacement.
As per The Sun, United are looking at Takefusa Kubo as a replacement for Antony and have sent scouts to assess his performances on at least seven occasions this campaign, including in Real Sociedad’s goalless draw with Real Betis last weekend.
The 22-year-old versatile forward, who joined Sociedad from Real Madrid, has been directly involved in 10 goals in La Liga and the Champions League this season.
Napoli tried to sign him for £26m in the summer but Sociedad turned down their bid. It’s claimed that the Spanish outfit would accept a fee in the region of £43m for the Japanese winger, who honed his footballing skills in Barcelona’s famed academy, La Masia.
