“Looks likely at this point” – Manager suggests Manchester United target is close to leaving
Manchester United are edging closer to securing the services of Southampton football director Jason Wilcox.
The Red Devils’ struggles on the pitch continue to mount pressure on Erik ten Hag, whose side have shown a real lack of control in matches in their last two outings, or all season for that matter.
At Brentford, United were hammered by the hosts, at least as far as conceding shots is concerned. Regardless, they led late in stoppage time thanks to Mason Mount’s well-taken goal. But the visitors gave away their lead within minutes, as Kristoffer Ajer smashed their net in the 99th minute to share the spoils.
Their trip to Stamford Bridge was even more disappointing, as Chelsea trailed 3-2 heading into the stoppage time. At the full-time whistle, the Blues took away all three points from United with a 4-3 win.
If things continue like this, it’s tough to see Ten Hag keep hold of his job at Old Trafford. Fortunately for him, the club’s hierarchy is focused on making changes behind the scenes at the moment.
Manchester United target has Southampton manager’s best wishes if he leaves
United are working on bringing back Jason Wilcox to Manchester. Currently at Southampton, Wilcox previously oversaw Manchester City’s youth football transformation as their academy director.
It’s understood that United want to make him their technical director as part of the new recruitment team. They are yet to find an agreement with Southampton, who turned down their initial approach.
However, their manager Russell Martin has indicated Wilcox’s exit is imminent. Discussing his potential departure, the Spaniard praised Wilcox’s work.
“If he ends up going, which if we’re being honest looks likely at this point, then he goes with nothing but good wishes from us all,” Martin said (via BBC).
“He has played such a huge part in changing the culture of this club and the feeling around the training ground, he’s enabled us to be the leaders that we want to be.”
INEOS are also working on finding an agreement with Newcastle for Dan Ashworth, who they see as their next director of football.
As we approach closer to the end of the season, they are likely to turn their attention towards addressing Ten Hag’s future at United as well. Should the Dutch coach fail to steady the ship, it won’t surprise many if he’s shown the exit door.
