Manchester United are looking to purchase Reinildo from Atletico Madrid, as per The Sun.

Erik ten Hag’s arrivals at Manchester United have been plenty but not entirely effective. Antony is arguably an exemplar of the Ajax connection failing to materialize.

Likewise, while injuries have kept the Dutch gaffer from fielding his best lineup, particularly in defense, that is increasingly looking like a sordid excuse.

Tyrell Malacia is one player who has really not been able to make a steady impact. The left-back spot is crucial to the success of any United side and both Malacia and Luke Shaw have been unavailable for much of this campaign.

Man United set their sights on Reinildo

In this context, it makes sense that United are reportedly looking to purchase Reinildo in what is expected to be a relatively cheap purchase at about £8 million.

If the deal goes through, the fullback will become the first player from Mozambique to ply his trade with a Premier League side.

In that regard, even Aston Villa are reportedly keen on acquiring the 30-year-old.

While his age will certainly raise some eyebrows at Old Trafford, the FFP restrictions almost dictate that if the club plans to have a proper squad with adequate backup options, such smart transfers must become the norm going forward.

Moreover, perhaps supporters need to remember that the likes of Shinji Kagawa and Robin Van Persie were outlier transfers during the end of Sir Alex Ferguson’s successful reign with the Red Devils.

Thus, even in the competitive contemporary setup, spending big need not necessarily translate into success.

For now, Erik ten Hag or whoever is United’s next manager has the priority of rebuilding smartly with an eye on backups and versatility.
