Manchester United have reportedly initiated contact with Jaap Stam, as they explore the possibility of bringing the Treble winner back to Old Trafford in a new role.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe-led INEOS have had a promising start at United, having made many changes behind the scenes to strengthen the club’s football structure and recruitment strategy.

Omar Berrada has been roped in from Manchester City to become United’s new CEO. Jason Wilcox, another former City figure, has joined the club as their new technical director.

Dan Ashworth has also been convinced to take the responsibility of sporting director, albeit an agreement with Newcastle for his move is yet to be reached.

Arrival of these experienced football minds is bound to improve Manchester United’s performance in the transfer market. Now, INEOS are supposedly planning to make an appointment that may end up further impressing the Old Trafford crowd.

According to Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb (via Sport Witness), United are ‘in touch’ to bring back Jaap Stam. The fan-favourite centre-back was a key part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad that won the historic treble in 1999.

Initial contacts have already been made, with the Red Devils understood to be interested in handing the 51-year-old a role that would be a link between the club and the technical staff.

His presence may end up helping the players to communicate their concerns better with the club and relevant figures at Carrington. The report goes on to add that his return to United is being ‘evaluated’.

Whether Stam would work alongside Erik ten Hag in his new role or a different manager remains unknown, as the position of United’s current gaffer remains uncertain due to his side’s underwhelming performance.
