Manchester United are pushing to sign João Neves, having already submitted a massive offer for the Benfica midfielder.

The Red Devils’ FA Cup triumph over Manchester City at Wembley — their first trophy under new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe — was partly driven by their young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.

Apart from his much-talked-about cool finish to double United’s lead, the club’s academy midfielder stood his ground, and even outclassed often times, against the likes of Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne.

However, to repeat similar performances in the Premier League on a regular basis, United need to help Mainoo by partnering him with another equally talented midfielder. It appears that is exactly on the club’s agenda.

Manchester United make offer for João Neves – report

According to Portuguese newspaper Record (via Sport Witness), Manchester United have submitted €60m offer to Benfica for their prodigious midfielder João Neves. However, the Portuguese outfit’s director Rui Costa immediately turned down the offer.

The 19-year-old’s contract includes a release clause of €120 million, and it is claimed Costa wouldn’t open discussions ‘for a sum below €100m’

Considering Benfica’s hard stance while negotiating with Chelsea for Enzo Fernández, it is tough to see them significantly move down from their asking price for a player who has attracted interest from United, Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, PSG, and Bayern Munich.

However, Record adds that the Old Trafford outfit are “further along”, having already made the first move with an offer.

Neves is easily one of the most exciting talents in Europe, and the defensive midfielder’s positional awareness and technical ability in possession could greatly complement Kobbie Mainoo’s skill sets.
